Loosen Up Your Watercolor with Sue Hensler
Class Description, Supplies & Instructor Bio
(Bring a sack Lunch)
Student Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Class Description
I will share some of my techniques and show you how to loosen up your paintings. We will start with broader washes, wet-in-wet, followed by negative painting as we start to see color & forms develop. There are several fun ways to achieve a more painterly look, including the use of plastic wrap, stencils, or just what I call "sling & fling". It works well with flowers but can be applied to other subjects as well. It can be made more realistic or abstract depending on your preference.
Supplies to Bring to Class:
Bring your favorite color palette but make sure you have some basic colors in the warm & cool family. My personal favorites are:
Lemon yellow and new gamboge
Yellow ochre or raw sienna
Sap or hookers green
Viridan or phthalo green
Cobalt blue
Prussian or phthalo blue
French Ultramarine
Burnt Sienna
Alizarin Crimson
Scarlet Lake
Any nice orange
Permanent rose
The above are suggestions only but they make up the bulk of my palette.
Other Supplies Required:
140 lb Watercolor paper (Arches is best)
Bring a few sheets (4) of 16 x 20 or 11 x 14 to experiment with various methods
Spray bottle
Paper towels and water container
Ruler, pencil, eraser
Photos you might want to paint, especially florals
Optional Supplies:
Kosher salt
Alcohol
Sea sponge
Stencils
Lace
Plastic wrap
