NEWS:
STILL SOME OPENINGS: in Shirley Blake’s Abstract class. Please visit her web site under Shirley Blake.com –
look for sub-title abstract art. You will see some of her work and more details to become better acquainted with
her. The workshop is all day on three Thursdays Feb 16, 23 and March 1. The cost is $150 for members $165
for non-members. If interested please sign up as soon as possible. See more info on Shirley’s class in the
Newsletter under the Class/Workshop section and also in the Estero-Artists attachment.
We appreciate the efforts of Jackie Marth and her education committee for setting up an exciting agenda of
classes for the season. Our goal is to have all or as many of our workshops and classes fill with enough
students to offer them.
Regarding Lunch following our Feb 6, Presentation with Canson Representative Mr. Ed Brickler. We have
invited Mr. and Mrs. Brickler to lunch, at the Wildcat Country Club, after the presentation, if you are interested in
joining in please advise Ina Wolf at the next Monday (Jan 30) Open Paint as she will need to make reservations
asap. Ina will have more details at Open Paint.
The Art Store in the Coconut Point Plaza, managed by the Art Council of Southwest Florida, will be receiving
paintings from our members, if interested, on February 6 th from noon to 5:00 at their store location in the Mall.
You may enter up to 4 paintings to be hung in the store for sale. The entry fee is $35. If a painting is sold the
cost to the artist will be a total of 30% plus tax. Fifteen percent goes to each the ACSWF and The Coconut
Point Plaza. Sandra Marks, President of the ACSWF will be attending our Feb 6 morning with Ed Brickler and will
give us more information at that time. Immediately following members may take their art to the store located on
Fashion Dr just North of the Theaters, 1st unit in the second block East side. Your paintings will hang for
approximately one month in the store. You will be required to “gallery sit” 1 day each month that your paintings

The Naples International Art and Antique Fair, Feb 24 to 26 has given us several tickets ”for two” to attend for
free. If you are interested tickets are available at Open Paint.
The Library show/Bonita Health Center show: President Marion Crawford reports: Last week we hung a new
show at the Bonita Health Center. Many of our members participated and there are 57 paintings hanging. Even
if you don’t have any work there, please stop and see the exhibit. I think you will be impressed by the quality and
variety of the paintings. Our reception at the library was very well received by the community. In addition, we
added several new members that day. A special thank you to Suzanne and Larry Brown, Maureen Jankauskas
and her husband who were responsible for hanging the shows. Many other members helped by donating food
that Jean Dahl was able to use for the reception. The library was so pleased they want to schedule our show for
next year.
Thank You: To Eric Pachner and Norma Starts for spending an afternoon each as “friends of the Library”
demonstrating painting in preliminary promotion for the Library show and reception.
CONGRATULATIONS TO FLORENCE ZDANOWITZ: Florence has been awarded, by the Von Liebig Art Center,
Naples Fl, “Most Creative Relating to Theme” for her painting “The Very Thought of You”. Her painting will hang
at the Von Liebig Art Center until the end of February 2012.

FEBRUARY 6, 2012 - 9:00 Open Paint Room, Mark your calendars: We are very happy to announce that ED
BRICKLER of the Canson corporation has agreed to speak to our members for approximately 2 hours.
Have you ever wondered what kind of paper to use for your project, how certain brushes work, what paints to
select? How do all those tools work together - Mr. Brickler will help unravel the mystery? Approximately half the
time will be given to individual questions and answers. Please attend class a few minutes early to be seated by
9:00am Mr. Brickler has generously agreed to volunteer his time for us, please show him a warm welcome.
Mr. Brickler is the director of the Canson Art Education Program. He is a working artist, and has been an art
material consultant for 20 years and has lectured on materials and techniques in art schools across North
America as well as publishing articles, and writing books. Mr. Brickler is a graduate of Moravian College in
Bethlehem PA, and the Baum School of Art, in Allentown, PA

Course Description – Taking the Next Step with Color, Contrast, and Composition
The focus for this class will be on exploring methods for creating paintings with dimension/depth and strong
viewer appeal using light, color, and good composition. Instructor demonstrations and student hands-on
projects will be used at the beginning of each class for the first few sessions. Students are then encouraged to
apply these techniques in each class by working on individual projects using their photo references or still life
composition. As always, the objective remains the same, to improve our oil painting skills and to have a good
time-sharing the experience with a group of people who enjoy fine art painting. Previous experience with basic
drawing and painting skills recommended. Materials list available at registration.

FEBRUARY 16: ALL ABOUT ABSTRACT: Dates: Thursday, February 16, 23, March 1, 2012, 9:00 to 3:00
Instructor, Shirley Blake. www.shirleyblake.com Demonstrations will be done in Acrylics, but students may paint
in Watercolor, Oil or Acrylic. Cost: $150 for series of all day instruction for 3 days. Where: Open Paint room
Course Description – All About Abstract Painting. This series will focus on learning all about abstract painting.
Each morning and afternoon session will feature a different way to use the elements of design, color, and
concept, to begin an abstract painting and work to follow through to completion. Your natural tendencies will
show your style as you choose the elements and principles of design to be used in your painting. Guided
exercises will be a part of the class as well as critique time each day. Demonstration will be in acrylic, but
students are welcome to use the media of their choice. Past experience is helpful but not a must. An open,
experimental, and “anything goes” attitude is most helpful! A supply list will be provided at registration.

Course Description – Water-media, Abstract
This workshop is for those interested in exploring the possibilities of various water-media on watercolor paper.
Applying watercolor and acrylic paint in an aqueous manner, Sue will move from intuitive application of paint
toward a structured finish. Sue’s background as an educator, her passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge, of these
methods will encourage you to move forward toward new directions in your paintings. A supply list will be
available at registration.
MARCH 15: NEW - WATERCOLOR BATIK Time: 9:00 to 3:00, Instructor: Sue Pink. www.suepink.com, Cost:

Course Description – Watercolor Batik
Take an island vacation! Escape your “rut” and try a new technique. Sue Pink is offering a one-day workshop
where students will learn the techniques involved in the fascinating process of batik painting. Sue will be
supplying the oriental paper, non-toxic, easy to use wax, iron and ironing board. Invited guests are Jimmy Buffet
and the Beach Boys, whose music will set the atmosphere for this delightful workshop. Dress code: t-shirts and
cut-offs, hula skirt optional. A supply list will be available at registration.
MARCH 22: NEW CLASS: PALETTE KNIFE IN OIL. Landscape to Photography. Time: 9:00 to 3:00, Cost: $50
Location: Open Paint room, Instructor: Jan Ellen
Course Description:
This information packed workshop is designed to give a good foundation for bold direct palette knife painting.
Class starts with a demonstration focusing on the most direct methods for painting strong vibrant oils using
painting knives. Participants will then paint from their own photos or select one provided by instructor.
MARCH 29: ENCAUSTIC Thursday March 29, 2012. Time: 9:00 to 3:00 Cost: $50 Instructor: Trish Tinsley.
Course Description:
Trish teaches the basics of encaustic painting (painting with hot bees wax, resin and pigment.) In this workshop
students will take away 5 greeting cards and one larger painting. Materials will be available for embellishments.
Repeat of Jan 5th, 2012 course.
FEBRUARY THRU MARCH, EVERY MONDAY AFTERNOON, DRAWING TO PAINT, Time: 12:30 to 3:00,
Location: Open Paint Room. Instructor: Judy Ladd. Cost $100.00 per month for members, non-members
$115.00 per month. You may sign up one month at a time or for both months to assure yourself a place in the
second month.
Course Format: The format for the two month course is designed to allow members the opportunity to work with
one instructor over a two month period, one lesson each week. The program will take you from project
development, through completion, with an early emphasis on drawing techniques. Students will be able to
concentrate more fully in areas that they would like to strengthen in their work both through the opportunity to
practice techniques at home as well as have in-class group lessons, and one-on-one classroom help.
Watercolor is the chosen medium as it is felt that this will allow the greatest number of students the opportunity
to participate.
NEW COURSE DESCRIPTION INFORMATION Re: DRAWING TO PAINT CLASSES. Judy Ladd has submitted
the following course outline to demonstrate the journey the students will take in this course.
“Our first month we will develop our drawing skills:
A) Contour drawing
a) Composition placement
b) Sketching/open air sketching
c) Value and shading
Our second month we will concentrate on:
a) Color wheel and introduction to watercolors and palette
b) Drawing steps to produce a painting/board prep
c) Steps in production of a watercolor
d) Watercolor painting/different techniques used in watercolor paintings
For any returning students, we will continue where you left off in our last class and take you to the next level.”
Note: at our January 9th meeting Judy did a presentation of her course and indicated she is flexible in respect to
the medium you might want to use in this class, so don’t be afraid to sign up if you choose something other than
watercolor. Judy will help you get “out of box” and move you forward on your artistic journey.

The art program for children this year will be for 5th graders, approx (10 years of age) from 3:30 to 5: We are
looking for members who would be willing to participate in this worthwhile project. If interested please contact
Maureen Jankauskas, her e-mail is loumoej@yahoo.com. You can volunteer to lead one or more programs or
assist the leader. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community and encourage our youth to
appreciate art. If you have any art or craft supplies that you might like to donate to this very worthwhile project
please drop them off at Open Paint: Brushes, paper, stencils, glue, rulers bit’s of fabric, ribbons, sequins, glitter
beads etc, it is all useful.

Harborside in Ft. Myers for the entire month of March. We encourage members to enter this show which is held
